Create Custom Instructions for Agents
Learn how AgentFlow applies agent-specific instructions, tenant-wide defaults, and web search controls, and what it means when settings are prefilled or disabled.
Custom instructions allows you to define how an agent responds, including its tone, focus, format, and constraints. In AgentFlow, you can configure custom instructions for each agent. Depending on your role, you can set the following level of instructions:
- Admins: Set tenant-wide instructions for a selected agent and can control whether users can override them.
- Users: Set personal instructions for a selected agent.

Custom instruction priority rules
The following table describes how the agent determines which instructions to apply based on configuration and update behavior.
| Scenario | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Only admin instructions exist | The agent follows the admin instructions. |
| Admin instructions exist and user-defined instructions are allowed | If a user adds instructions, the agent follows the user instructions. |
| Both admin and user instructions exist | The most recently updated instruction takes priority. For example, if the admin instructions was updated more recently, the agent follows the admin instructions. However, if the administrator disables user-defined instructions after a user update, the agent follows the admin instructions. |
