Disaster Recovery (DR)
The strategies and processes an organization puts in place to recover and maintain business operations following a disaster, such as data loss, system failure, or cyber attack. It involves planning and implementing measures to ensure that critical systems and data can be quickly restored to minimize downtime and data loss.
Failback
The process of returning operations to the original primary system or location after a failover has occurred. It involves resynchronizing data and systems to ensure that the primary environment is fully operational and can take over from the secondary environment.
Failover
The process of switching to a redundant or standby system, component, or network upon the failure or abnormal termination of the previously active system, component, or network. This ensures that services remain available with minimal interruption during a disaster or outage.
Primary Region
The main geographic location where an organization's critical data and applications are hosted and actively running. It serves as the main operational site for accessing services and data.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
The maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time. It indicates the point in time to which data must be recovered as defined by the organization. For example, if the RPO is 5 minutes, the system should be restored with data no older than 5 minutes from the time of the failure.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
The maximum acceptable amount of time that a system, application, or function can be down after a failure or disaster before negatively impacting the business.This is the target time for recovering normal operations after a disruption.
Mirrored Region
The secondary geographic location that acts as a backup to the primary region. In the event of a disaster or failure in the primary region, the mirrored region takes over to ensure continuity of services. This region is set up as a standby, with mirrored data and systems to be activated only when needed.
